A burst line can release dozens of gallons before anyone grabs a towel. The difference between a mop-up and a gutted room is almost never the plumber's drive time — it's what happens in the first fifteen minutes, before the truck arrives. And the whole playbook fits in four moves.
Move 1: kill the water
Everything starts at the main shut-off. Every adult in the house should know where it is — typically where the supply enters the house, in the garage, a utility area, or a ground box near the street — and it should be turned off and on once a year so it doesn't seize. For a single overflowing fixture, the small angle valve behind it buys the same result faster.
Move 2: kill the power where water is going
Water and electricity don't negotiate. If water is heading toward outlets, appliances, or the floor of a room with power in it, shut off the breaker for that area — only if you can reach the panel without stepping into water. When in doubt, leave it and say so when you call.
Move 3: document before you clean
Your insurance claim lives or dies on documentation, and the water line on the wall is evidence. Take photos and video of everything wet before moving or mopping anything: the source, the spread, the damaged belongings. It takes three minutes and it's the most valuable three minutes of the whole claim.
Move 4: call, and say the right things
When you call a 24/7 plumber, lead with the facts that set priority: active flow or stopped, where the water is, whether the main is off, and whether sewage is involved. Sewage backing up into a tub is a health emergency, not a mess — say it first. A good dispatcher will also talk you through anything else worth doing while the truck rolls.
After the water stops
Once the line is repaired, the drying clock starts. Wet drywall and flooring have roughly 24 to 48 hours before mold joins the party. If the emergency soaked finished space, ask about drying at the same visit — the fix isn't finished until the house is dry.
